UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Heart Center
Babies, children and young adults with heart conditions now have a new and specialized location to receive treatment and care. The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital opened to patients and families in November. The new state-of-the-art PCICU at UH Rainbow has 12 beds and was designed with patients and families in mind. The unit features spacious rooms, plenty of windows to allow for natural light, and child- and family-friendly décor. The PCICU joins the 10-bed cardiac step-down unit and hybrid cardiac catheterization and surgical suites within the Congenital Heart Collaborative at UH Rainbow.

Child Life Specialist in the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit
Child Life Specialists work with patients and families in the TSICU to provide psychosocial support in order to minimize the stress of hospitalization. For patients ages 14 -24 child life utilizes education, advocacy and a variety of tools, including but not limited to, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation and bedside diversion and distraction to facilitate emotional expression. These methods mitigate fear and anxiety and promote positive coping by addressing the specific needs of safety, privacy, independence and emotional regulation in the adolescent and young adult population. In addition, child life specialists support children of adult trauma patients. This is accomplished in a variety of ways. Child life prepares young children to enter the intensive care environment in a developmentally appropriate way, provides art materials to engage children and elicit emotional expression during their visit, and works with the family as a whole on how to best support children separated from a caregiver and/or loved one. Lastly, the child life team provides bereavement support to families, offering education on how to talk to children about death, emotional support for families during end of life, legacy making activities and follow up communication after loss.
