About

Michael Zell, MD is a board-certified urologist at University Hospitals and an associate clinical professor of urology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His clinical and research interests include minimally invasive treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP); diagnosis and treatment of kidney stones; and the use of advanced robotic techniques in kidney, ureter, bladder and prostate surgeries. Dr. Zell believes in a patient-centered, holistic approach to care – a philosophy that he embraces in his clinical practice and teaches to medical students and residents in his role as professor.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Management Sciences and Engineering at Stanford University, Dr. Zell attended medical school at University of California, San Diego. During his medical school years, he was actively involved in research related to urology and orthopedics and donated much of his time to the student-run free clinic. Dr. Zell went on to complete an internship in general surgery and a residency in urology at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. His residency training had a particular focus on robotic surgery and holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). He is, in fact, first author of the peer-reviewed publication, Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate for very large benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, Dr. Zell is an accomplished lacrosse player, having served as team captain during his senior year at Stanford. Prior to entering medical school, he worked in the finance industry in San Francisco, California.

It was very difficult to find his office. There were no maps, signs, or directions to urology. I had to get a kind person to help me find the office. Similarly, it was hard to find my way back to where my car was parked. I was given incorrect directions. Again, there were no signs or maps showing the layout.

Dr. Zell was great as well as his support staff. All compliments & no complaints about the physician. However, I still have disdain for UH Administration who I feel care nothing about my care & simply ride on the coat tails of good physicians like Dr. Zell.

At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
