About
Breana R. Siljander, MD, is a fellowship-trained, board-eligible adult reconstruction and joint replacement surgeon at University Hospitals and an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University. She specializes in the surgical treatment of hip and knee arthritis and revision of failed total joint replacements due to fracture, infection or loosening. She serves as the Director of Robotic Surgery for Total Joint Replacement at University Hospitals. She also holds a secondary appointment as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Case School of Engineering.
She studied medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and completed her orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. She then completed an adult reconstruction and Joint Replacement fellowship at the renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She is grateful for the many mentors that helped train her and feels very fortunate to have a career that she is passionate about.
As an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics at Case Western University, Dr. Siljander spends time teaching and mentoring residents and medical students, giving lectures and performing research. She has presented her research at national meetings and published multiple studies in peer-reviewed journals on various orthopedic topics. Her research interests include patient-specific joint replacement, hip and knee replacement in young patients, and clinical outcomes of primary and revision hip and knee replacements. She is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA). She serves on multiple national committees and is a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Arthroplasty. She was elected into the AOA as an Emerging Leader and has participated in multiple national leadership conferences.
Prior to her medical education, Dr. Siljander studied mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she graduated with honors. She worked on design projects including an arthroplasty implant, a bone thermoregulating device and an open-chain robot, which introduced her to the field of orthopedic surgery. She is passionate about the direct application of engineering principles to better the lives of her patients.
In her free time, Dr. Siljander enjoys playing sports, training for marathons and Ironman triathlons, spending time with her family and friends, and traveling.
