About

David Sheyn, MD, is Associate Professor of Urology and Reproductive Biology at Case Western Reserve University and a faculty member of the Department of Urology at University Hospitals. Prior to joining the Department of Urology in June of 2020, Dr. Sheyn completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology and three-year fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery in the Department of Urology, both at University Hospitals. He is the current division director of urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery at University Hospitals Urology Institute.

Education and Training

Dr. Sheyn was born in Lviv, Ukraine, and raised in Cincinnati. After graduating high school, he was admitted into the dual-degree program at the University of Cincinnati, where he earned a degree in biomedical engineering, and was nominee for the prestigious Herman Schneider Medal, and his medical doctorate. He completed an intern year in internal medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, before starting a residency in diagnostic radiology. However, due to missing direct patient care, he switched his specialty to obstetrics and gynecology, where he was awarded the Wulf Utian Award for academic, clinical and educational accomplishments; he then pursued further fellowship training in female pelvic reconstruction in the Department of Urology. During his fellowship, he published over 30 peer reviewed publications and was a co-principal investigator on several grants.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Sheyn provides compassionate and comprehensive care for all pelvic floor disorders; including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder, voiding disorders, hematuria, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder and vaginal fistulas, genitourinary symptoms of menopause, neuromodulation, functional bladder and vaginal disorders in cancer survivors, complications of obstetric trauma, constipation, fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, and interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome. He also has specific interests in uterine preserving surgery for female genital prolapse and providing multidisciplinary care for pelvic floor disorders in cancer survivors. Dr. Sheyn is part of a group of physicians and surgeons that is focused on providing full spectrum care for pelvic floor disorders patients who have undergone surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy; and is actively collaborating with the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center Cancer Survivorship Program. He also has a specific interest in the use of neuromodulation to treat bladder disorders in women with neurologic conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

Research Interest

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sheyn maintains a strong research presence. He has published over 100 peer reviewed research papers and his main focus is on the understanding of the causes and treatment of urgency incontinence and overactive bladder. His work focuses on identifying different phenotypes of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence in order to better understand how these conditions develop and progress and how to best individualize treatment options. He has identified differences in brain structure and urine composition in both women with overactive bladder compared to those without this condition, as well as those women who respond to certain treatments. He has also developed an artificial intelligence prediction model to identify women who may respond to anti-cholinergic therapy for overactive bladder, and this model is currently undergoing clinical verification. His goal is to apply artificial intelligence to develop a precision medicine approach to the treatment of this very impairing condition. In addition, he has performed extensive research in the area of surgical outcomes, focusing particularly on post-operative complications in women undergoing pelvic floor surgery. Dr. Sheyn serves as a peer reviewer for a number of well- known medical journals including Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a member of the editorial board of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He has also received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and several industry partners.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
