Dr. James Ohliger III is a Lorain County native. He completed his fellowship in Orthopedic surgery sports medicine in Lake Tahoe, California and is returning home to practice in northeast Ohio. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron and his medical degree at West Virginia University School of Medicine. Following completion of medical school, he completed orthopedic surgery residency training at Summa Health in Akron, OH.

During his fellowship in Lake Tahoe, California he focused his time on new advanced techniques associated with minimally invasive procedures. He has advanced training in arthroscopic shoulder, knee and ankle procedures as well as robotic joint replacements. He is an active team physician for the USA Ski and Snowboard teams. He travels internationally as the team physician for these Olympic athletes. He has presented nationally at a multitude of conferences and is well published in orthopedic surgery.

His surgical practice includes fracture care, arthroscopic procedures of shoulder, knee and ankle joints as well as joint replacements of the shoulder, hip and knee. Acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries ranging from those sustained while playing sports to chronic conditions such as arthritis are his expertise.

His father James E Ohliger Jr has been practicing family medicine in northeast Ohio for over 30 years. He decided to follow his footsteps in the field of medicine. “Growing up and watching my father practice I have learned to always put the patient first. This exposure has provided me with upmost appreciation for my patients. My goal as an orthopedic surgeon is to educate patients about treatment options whether it be surgical and nonsurgical modalities. Together we will come to a treatment plan that will be individualized based on patient activities, goals of return and many other factors.”

The physician was excellent. I was, however, concerned about the lag time between when I had my MRI and the wait to hear from the doctor's office to schedule an appointment to review the MRI with me. After 4 weeks, I called the office to inquire about scheduling an appointment with the physician which was done immediately. I never was told why I was not contacted by the office to schedule an appointment?

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
