About

Christina Nguyen, MD, joined University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s in 2020 as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology. Her leadership roles at UH Rainbow also include Medical Director of Pediatric Kidney Transplantation and Medical Director of Pediatric Dialysis. Prior to joining UH Rainbow, Dr. Nguyen’s professional appointments included Medical Director, Nephrology Point of Care Ultrasonography, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Department of Pediatrics, from January 2013 to May 2019; and Medical Director, Pediatric Kidney Transplantation, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Department of Pediatrics, from January 2014 to May 2019.

Dr. Nguyen earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry/biochemistry from Bethany College in 2002. She obtained her medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 2006. Dr. Nguyen’s post-graduate medical training included a residency in pediatrics at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital completed in 2009; a fellowship in pediatric nephrology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh completed in 2012; and a mini-fellowship in renal ultrasonography at Emory University completed in 2013.

As an educator, Dr. Nguyen has served as an assistant professor at the Department of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 2019. She was also an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from August 2012 to May 2019.

Professional societies in which Dr. Nguyen is a member include the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, International Pediatric Nephrology Association, International Pediatric Transplant Association and American Society of Transplantation. In addition, she has served as a member of the International Pediatric Transplant Association Outreach Committee, American Society of Transplantation Pediatric Community of Practice Executive Committee, American Society of Pediatric Nephrology Education Committee, and American Society of Transplantation Education Committee, among other committees and subcommittees.

Dr. Nguyen has been an invited lecturer at Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Baystate Children’s Hospital, OPTUM Health Conference, Bethany College Women’s Leadership Conference, Nephrology Urology Research Affinity Group and other institutions and conferences, speaking on wide variety of pediatric nephrology topics. She has also presented and moderated at national and international meetings hosted by the International Transplant Congress, Pediatric Academic Societies, and American Society of Nephrology and American Transplant Congress, among others.

In addition to publishing numerous abstracts, book chapters and editorials, Dr. Nguyen has contributed original publications to a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including Molecular Breeding, Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation, Current Opinion Organ Transplantation, Pediatric Transplantation, Pediatrics and Pediatric Transplantation. Among other honors and awards, Dr. Nguyen is the recipient of the Chair of Distinction Award (2016 and 2017), Junior Clinician Award (2012 – 2014), Patient Experience Award (2018) and Patient Satisfaction Award (2017) at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh; and Teacher of the Year Award at UH Rainbow (2021).

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
