About
Pedro-José López, MD, is a pediatric urologist and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Urology at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s and a professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. As Division Chief, Dr. Lopez brings a depth and breadth of surgical expertise and a passion for the patient’s and family’s holistic experience. He is committed to bringing the concept of “surgery with compassion” to the forefront and raising the standard of care for pediatric urology in Northeast Ohio and beyond.
Dr. Lopez earned a Bachelor of Medical and Biological Sciences and his medical degree at the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile. His post-graduate training included a fellowship in pediatric surgery and a fellowship in pediatric urology at Hospital Exequiel Gonzalaez Cortes- Universidad de Chile, in Chile; a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery and pediatric urology at University of Adelaide and Women’s & Children´s Hospital in Australia; and fellowships in pediatric surgery, pediatric urology and adolescent urology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the University College of London in the United Kingdom.
Prior to joining UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s in 2024, Dr. Lopez served as Chair of the Department of Pediatric Urology at Hospital Dr. Exequiel González Cortés in Santiago, Chile, and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Urology at Clínica Alemana de Santiago in Chile. He also served as a physician consultant for other health services in Chile and South America.
Dr. Lopez is internationally known for his leadership in pediatric urology and educating trainees. He focuses his clinical and academic interests around complex reconstructive urological procedures, minimally invasive surgery and prenatal/in-utero urological counseling and intervention, as well as developing multidisciplinary programs and clinics. He is also passionate about research and educating the next generation of pediatric urologic surgeons.
Dr. Lopez is a regular attendee and presenter at international conferences and symposiums and has contributed original articles or served as an editor and/or reviewer for a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Urology, Journal of Pediatric Urology, World Journal of Urology, Pediatric Surgery International and British Journal of General Practice. He has also authored book chapter content and served as editor for various medical textbooks and manuals. Dr. Lopez has received multiple best study in pediatric urology awards in international congress.
Dr. Lopez has served as president, vice president and other executive roles for several professional medical societies. He is an active member in the Chilean Pediatric Surgery Society, Society for Fetal Urology, Societé Internationale d’ Urologie, Paediatric Urology Junior Organization, Iberoamerican Society of Pediatric Urology, American Urological Association, American Confederation of Urology, and European Society for Paediatric Urology.
Among other honors and awards, Dr. Lopez was the recipient of the Physician of the Year Award, Department of Pediatric Surgery at Hospital Dr. Exequiel González Cortés in 2006.
Dr. Lopez enjoys living in Cleveland with his beautiful family, which includes his wife, Carolina, and his three children, Iñaki, Gracia and Borja. His passions include soccer, surfing, running and playing the saxophone.
