About
Yakov Elgudin, MD, PhD, FACS, is a cardiac surgeon and Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation with University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He is also an Associate Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Elgudin earned his medical degree from Kemerovo State Medical Institute followed by master and doctorate degrees from the Institute of Transplantation and Artificial Organs in Russia. Dr. Elgudin then completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Exempla-Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He completed four fellowships – a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at St. Luke/Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York, a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at UCLA Medical Center, a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and a pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s.
With his extensive training and experience, Dr. Elgudin has developed a large heart surgery practice over the years. His clinical special interests include mitral valve repair, complex aortic surgery, complex redo cardiac surgery, mechanical circulatory support, and heart and lung transplantation.
Dr. Elgudin has several patents related to bioprosthetic heart valves and is the author of more than 30 publications in national peer-reviewed journals. He is an active member of numerous prestigious organizations including the American College of Surgeons, American Heart Association, American Medical Association, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Additionally, Dr. Elgudin is President of the Russian American Medical Association and enjoys medical missions to Siberia, where he performs and teaches adult and pediatric cardiac surgery.
