About
Ronald Charles, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is also a Clinical Instructor of Anatomy at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, where he provides small group instruction to first and second year medical students.
Dr. Charles joined the medical staff of UH in 2017 and in 2019 became a member of the Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) Operations Committee - a team responsible for implementing protocols to improve surgical outcomes in multiple surgical specialties. Dr. Charles practices a full breadth of colon and rectal surgeries including both open and laparoscopic procedures. His special clinical interests include recurrent colon and rectal cancer along with re-operative colorectal surgery.
Dr. Charles received his undergraduate training at City College of New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, magna cum laude with honors in research. He went on to earn his medical doctorate at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City, followed by an internship, residency and research fellowship in general surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Charles completed his fellowship in colon and rectal surgery, also at the Cleveland Clinic, after which he completed more advanced and specialized training in re-operative pelvic surgery for rectal cancer and complex IBD/J-pouch surgery.
A member of the American College of Surgeons American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Dr. Charles has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions throughout his training and has authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts and poster presentations. Most recently, he co-authored a book chapter on the Mastery of IBD Surgery in Continent Ileostomy.
Dr. Charles calls Cleveland home and is an avid fan of the Browns, Cavs and Indians.
