Hambrick Family Gift Establishes First Cardiac Recovery Center in Region
In honor of a generous $5 million gift from Angela and James Hambrick, and in recognition of the importance of improving heart care in Northeast Ohio and beyond, University Hospitals established a new Center of Excellence – the Hambrick Center for Cardiac Recovery at UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute.
Every year, approximately one million Americans suffer from a heart attack, which can lead to cardiogenic shock. There is a critical one-hour treatment window after cardiogenic shock occurs, making timing crucial. Without immediate treatment, patients in cardiogenic shock have a 70 to 90 percent mortality rate.
“UH already has one of the lowest mortality rates for cardiogenic shock patients among U.S. News & World Report top-ranked heart centers,” said Thomas F. Zenty III, UH Chief Executive Officer. “This generous donation will allow us to further our commitment to improving survival rates in Northeast Ohio and across the country.”
A coordinated team of physicians, nurses and other cardiovascular experts at seven UH locations are currently prepared to treat cardiogenic shock patients. Because of this gift, an expanded footprint in the near future will help serve even more people.
The Hambricks’ support will also allow UH to recruit top clinicians for cardiac recovery, continue to enhance care using the most advanced technologies and integrated processes, and become a national center to train and educate cardiogenic shock care providers.
“We were inspired to make this gift because of the innovative care at UH and the immediate impact the center can and will have,” said James. “Health care is evolving at a rapid rate and we want to ensure that UH physicians and the treatments they discover and provide remain at the forefront.”
The Hambricks previously established the Angela and James Hambrick Master Clinician in Innovation, an endowed position that supports leadership and innovative advances in cardiology.
“UH is committed to bringing lifesaving care to patients in their local community and this gift from Angela and James will allow us to do just that with cardiac recovery,” said Marco A. Costa, MD, PhD, MBA, President, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute and Angela and James Hambrick Master Clinician in Innovation. “The Hambrick Center is precisely where science and compassion meet – we are coordinating the latest in treatment options in convenient locations to save lives today.”
