Creating a Pediatric Powerhouse
In a primary care office in Mentor, a UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s pediatrician calls a pediatric pulmonology colleague at our main campus, coordinating care for their young patient with asthma. At the new UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children in the MidTown neighborhood in Cleveland, a mom and her two kids get long-overdue vision checks and fill their prescriptions – all in one stop. Across the world in Thailand, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s neonatologists share groundbreaking research and decades of experience with hundreds of physician colleagues at a scientific gathering they helped launch – the Bangkok International Neonatology Symposium.
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s lives in many places, from dozens of pediatric primary care locations across Northeast Ohio to the flagship children’s hospital in the heart of University Circle and the countless venues where its expertise is felt.
Leading the clinical team is Marlene Miller, MD, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s new Chair of Pediatrics and UH Pediatrician-in-Chief. Dr. Miller joined UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s from Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore where she served in leadership roles in quality and safety.
Still in her first year, Dr. Miller has quickly added vital members to our leadership, hiring new vice chairs for medical education and research and a new division chief of pediatric nephrology. UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s is currently training 99 pediatric residents and 71 fellows, sharing a strong legacy for exceptional clinical care with the next generation of clinicians. At the same time, our researchers are daily challenging the status quo, advancing cancer immunotherapy and new approaches to managing the growing problem of pediatric diabetes.
“My vision is to lead the nation in child health, and for me it all begins with the people,” Dr. Miller said. “That’s the faculty and staff that we recruit and retain to build exceptional teams and support great programs for our patients.”
Great teams lead to great outcomes, whether it’s helping a preterm infant grow into a rambunctious toddler or helping a teenage soccer player recover and bounce back from a dream-threatening knee injury.
That’s Dr. Miller’s vision – to build teams for clinical excellence, robust education and leading-edge research to provide UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s patients and their families with the highest quality care.
