What is Atrial Fibrillation Ablation?
Also called pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), atrial fibrillation (AFib) ablation is a minimally invasive option typically recommended for symptomatic AFib patients who failed or developed side effects to at least one antiarrhythmic medication. During the procedure, a doctor inserts catheters (thin hollow tubes) into a blood vessel in the groin and threads it up to and inside the heart. Accessing the interior of the heart in this manner, the doctor scars a small area of the organ using small burns or freezes. The scarring helps stop the heart from conducting the abnormal electrical signals that cause AFib, thereby helping to restore and maintain normal heart rhythm.
