Blood and Marrow Transplant

Ireland's Blood and Marrow Transplant Program is a designated allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplant center for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, and transplant center for the National Marrow Donor Program.

Since University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center established its Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program in 1976, Ireland physicians have performed well over 1,000 transplants for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, breast cancer and other solid tumors.

Physicians at Ireland's Blood and Marrow Transplant Program were among the first in the U.S. to perform autologous transplants using peripheral blood stem cells. Since 1994, they have performed allogeneic transplants using peripheral blood stem cells obtained from normal donors.

Since 1995, the Ireland Cancer Center has made a significant commitment to further the use of both related and unrelated umbilical cord blood in transplantation for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and severe aplastic anemia. A procedure already offered to children, University Hospitals is among the first centers in the United States to also offer cord blood transplantation to adults.
