Uterine Cancer

Cancer of the uterus is the fourth most common cancer in women. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 41,000 women will be diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2006. Uterine cancer occurs most often in postmenopausal women and usually presents as abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Surgery is the primary form of treatment for uterine cancer. In addition, chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be necessary depending on the stage of the disease. Uterine cancer is highly curable when detected at an early stage.

Each week specialists from multiple disciplines meet to discuss gynecologic cancer cases and design comprehensive treatment programs. Cancer treatment is complemented with personalized care from oncology nurses and social workers, creating a compassionate, supportive environment for gynecologic oncology patients.

UH Ireland Cancer Center is a full member and active participant in the Gynecologic Oncology group, the principal study group for gynecologic cancers. Researchers and physicians work together to offer patients the most sophisticated methods of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
