The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 20,000 cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in 2006. Although it accounts for less than 4% of all cancers in women, ovarian cancer causes more deaths than uterine or cervical cancer. This is because ovarian cancer often does not have signs and symptoms at its earliest stages, when it is highly curable.
At UH Ireland Cancer Center, gynecologic oncologists are available to perform the very specialized surgery that is required to treat ovarian cancer. Further treatment options include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The gynecologic cancer care team designs an individualized and comprehensive treatment program that optimizes the chances of survival for women with ovarian cancer.
Each week, specialists from multiple disciplines meet to discuss gynecologic cancer cases and design comprehensive treatment programs. Cancer treatment is complemented with personalized care from oncology nurses and social workers, creating a compassionate, supportive environment for gynecologic oncology patients.
UH Ireland Cancer Center is a full member and active participant in the Gynecologic Oncology group, the principal study group for gynecologic cancers. Researchers and physicians work together to offer patients the most sophisticated methods of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
