What is an epileptologist?
A pediatric epileptologist is a doctor with significant specialty training who focuses on treating children with epilepsy.
These physicians have had the normal training after medical school, including a three year residency in Pediatrics followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Neurology. Then, in addition, they receive two additional years of dedicated epilepsy training in a comprehensive epilepsy program, with a special emphasis on pediatric epilepsy.
This immersion in the study and practice of epilepsy care gives these doctors an edge when it comes to making accurate diagnoses and choosing the best possible treatments.
Because of their extensive training, epileptologists also bring extra skill to the understanding of all the different epilepsy medications and their side effects, as well as to drug-related issues affecting adolescent women, such as hormone interaction.
