It's almost always stressful when a baby is unexpectedly admitted to the NICU. But the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers in the unit will do their best to provide emotional support for you while caring for your infant's medical needs.
With equipment designed for infants and a hospital staff who have special training in newborn care, the NICU is an intensive care unit created for sick newborns who need specialized treatment.

The NICU at Rainbow is a modern 38-bed unit fully equipped to care for newborn infants with complex medical problems. The nursery is designated by the state as a Level III unit & is staffed by an array of specially trained & certified physicians, nurses, including neonatal nurse practitioners, therapists, & other consultant specialists.
Ranked #2 in the U.S. for neonatal care, Rainbow now has the facilities to match the outstanding care that our most fragile patients receive.

The NICU at Rainbow is widely regarded as an international leader in treating critically-ill babies and extremely low birth weight babies.

The Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rainbow Babies opened in the spring of 2009.

The Rainbow NICU Level III unit is designed by the National Institutes of Health as a Neonatal Research Center.

Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is once again ranked second in the nation for care of newborns by U.S. News & World Report.

The outstanding NICU ranking is especially exciting for our team.”

Rainbow has just opened the new Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a $26.2-million state-of-the-art NICU which includes many technological advances and neonatal firsts.  The new unit, which expands the NICU from 8,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet, has single rooms for each baby, where parents can be with their newborn 24 hours a day.  The new facility also features the first surgical operating table developed for preemies and newborns designed by Rainbow staff.

“Rainbow’s neonatology program has long been revered as pioneers in the specialty, with the best outcomes in the country for caring for premature and critically ill babies,” said Richard Martin, MD, Chief of the Division of Neonatology.  “Our new NICU enhances our already storied program.”
