The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 61,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2006. It is the fourth most common type of cancer and is more common in men than women. Cigarette smoking has been identified as having a primary role in the development of bladder cancer, with smokers having twice the risk than nonsmokers. Another risk factor is occupational exposure to dyes, leather, paint, and organic chemicals.
